We have met four different individuals from Orangetown’s past. Your assignment is to write a letter to one of these persons. In it you are to ask some questions based on the information that you learned today. Ask something that interests you – something that is specific to the time period that you are curious about. It could be – Where were you deployed after Camp Shanks – What were your living quarters like? What did a teenager in 1795 do for fun – What did your house look like? What kind of games did a kid in the 1950’s play – what role did early T.V. play in your life? What about all of that lace – what kind of clothes would one wear in 1916?

Once your letter is written the second part of this assignment is to answer the letter – from the perspective of the chosen historical individual. You will do this using information that you gained from today’s presentation looking at primary source artifacts as well as research. You may research your topic using the library or internet sources such as Wikipedia or by searching for newspaper articles from the period. You must include a creative component with your presentation; this can be a drawing, a map or model that you have made, perhaps a dress or uniform in miniature or an original poem that emulates the period. Remember that you will be describing someone who lived in Orangetown before our time. If you wish, you may bring in to class for the presentation only a primary source artifact from home to substantiate your research.

Your paper will be one page, typed, in the form of a letter answering you. In it you are to answer the letter in the first person – as if you are that individual – but make sure to base your answers in historical fact. Use a date specific to your time period, (1795, 1916, 1942 or 1956) state works cited and try to find out as much about that time as possible. Good luck!
